Sesame seed oil is a natural oil that is extracted from sesame seeds; it is used in Indian cooking extensively. The Indians also believe that sesame oil called “thil kaa thel” in Hindi and “nallennai” in Tamil has extensive medicinal properties and believe that it has anti-bacterial properties. And I figured that this would be a good agent to latch on to in my fight against cellulitis.

Sesame oil is extracted from sesame seeds by two basic processes. One method is by hot pressing and the other method is by cold pressing. Cold pressed sesame oil is the better form, because none of the nutrients and micro-constituents get destroyed in the extraction process. And so, I went to a local Indian grocery store and purchased a bottle of Idhayam brand sesame oil.

In the morning, I would take a clean tissue and soak it with sesame oil and gently apply it into my belly button and then discard the tissue by flushing it down the toilet. This was a topical application.

Additionally, once I finished my morning pranayama, I would ingest one glass of cold water and then I performed oil pulling using sesame oil – again I used Idhayam brand because I felt it was of good quality. There are a variety of sources on the internet where you can learn about oil pulling and how it extracts toxins from the body primarily through the gums in the mouth. I performed this five out of seven days.

Thus, pranayama, sesame oil topical application as well as oil pulling were performed wednesdays through sundays with mondays and tuesdays being clear of any of these practices.

There were some special hygiene practices I followed which will be explained in the next article entitled Hygiene practices for cellulitis.

Cellulitis and yoga pranayama

As mentioned in my previous article, I planned to use the technique of Pranayama to destroy the excess cellulitis bacterial infection. Note that I was not interested in destroying all bacteria. Let them live also, but let me live too. Live and let live is an ancient Indian philosophy. Ok Cellulitis bacteria, you can have your space but let me have mine too. And what exactly is pranayama? And can pranayama help in dealing with cellulitis? Let us explore.

Pranayama is a set of yoga breathing exercises where one takes in oxygen in excess and get rid of the toxins in the body by way of exhalation. Now, normal breathing accomplishes the same thing, well sort of. In normal breathing, you take in oxygen and exhale carbondioxide. In Pranayam yoga, you take in excess oxygen and get rid of as much toxins as possible every single time.

Additionally, you concentrate on each breath with divine respect. You look at your inhalation step not simply as inhaling oxygen, but rather as yourself inhaling divine prana and not just exhaling carbondioxide but rather removing all toxins from the body. You concentrate on the parts of the body one by one where you want this divine energy concentrated and sort of performing a cleansing activity. In my case, my concentration was generally focused on to my belly button where the cellulitis bacterial infection had made a home for itself.

I performed Bhastrika, Kapaalbhathi, Anulom- Vilom, Ujjayi, Bramar, Udgeet and Bahya pranayam which are seven basic pranayam yoga techniques the very first thing in the morning and once in the evening. There are various sources that you can learn more about these techniques.

Additionally, I concentrated on the divine energy that is ALL encompassing ALL day long. For example, when I drank water, I said to myself, “This divine water enters my body to nourish it, fight off excess evil and bring balance”; similarly when I ate food, I said the same thing to myself.

Remember, the goal was not to destroy ALL evil. This is where problems arise both inside our bodies and outside in the world, per my opinion. We do not need zealots starting warfare on the basis of religion, political policies, land ownership and a million other reasons. If we decide to live in a co-existing manner and maintain BALANCE, there will be peace. Peace should be the goal, not victory. In my case I could care less about emerging victorious over the cellulitis bacteria; I just wanted peace and balance so I do not have excess pain. A small amount of pain is okay as long as it is bearable. Unbearable pain is what I did not want.

Along with pranayama, I took another step in my battle with my umbilical cellulitis. That was the use of sesame seed oil. This will be covered in my next post entitled dealing cellulitis with sesame oil. Again, it is strongly advised that you consult with your doctor before attempting any self diagnosis or treatment. The medical disclaimer on this site explains this.

Treating my cellulitis infection

In treating my cellulitis infection by myself, I took a deep philosophical approach. My thoughts had to come from deep within my psyche, rather than from the tips of my tongue. Only then would results be attainable.

I figured that a bacteria either strep or staph had entered my God given body and was giving me pain that I felt due to this so called cellulitis infection. I needed to maintain balance with ALL living things, including those that gave me pain, such as bacteria. I should extend my love to the bacteria and in turn they will not harm me. As long as there was balance, we ALL could co-exist; only when one tries to overpower the other will problems and pain arise. So some of the bacteria had to recede from their *occupied* territory and return back to their rightful owner which was myself.

To do this, I needed my body to be stronger. I needed my cells to be stronger to fight and ward off the excess invaders. My cells needed the necessary nourishment to fight. And this nourishment was not going to be through senseless vitamins purchased from stores, most of which may not have any scientific basis, not to mention the countless fillers and crap that may be in them. This nourishment was going to be through oxygen. I wanted to provide my body cells with excess oxygen obtained freely from the air we breathe in.

I had read somewhere that an oxygen rich environment is considered toxic to bacteria and I wanted to capitalize on that concept. Whether that concept is true or not, I do not know. But I BELIEVED it to be true. Placebo effect or not, unproven science or not, I believed that the greatest drug store in the world is right between ones’ ears. By the way, this is a saying that I have proudly authored. The greatest drug store in the world is right between ones’ ears. Meaning that the mind can do wonders for an ailing body.

If you believe you are going to fail, there is a high likelihood that you will. There is an old saying someone said, *Whether you believe you can do something or not, you are right*. I was going to succeed with my belief.

And how would I pump excess oxygen to my body cells to fight off the cellulitis infection? At no extra cost? Using the ancient Indian yoga technique called Pranayama which I shall discuss in my next post entitled Cellulitis and Pranayama.

Cellulitis infection reflection

In my previous post entitled cellulitis surgery, I had ended it with a promise to continue my thoughts on the bad meeting I had with the surgeon who wanted to perform surgery for my cellulitis infection and my subsequent reflections on the matter. I came home that evening and all kinds of scary thoughts had started going through my mind. Now, the work I do is quite involved and potentially dangerous if care is not exercised and mental alertness not exerted ALL of the time. All that did not kill me and this lousy cellulitis bacterial infection could potentially kill me – what an irony I thought.

Now, I am not stupid enough to lead my life without any kinds of planning. I had made some plans for my family’s future in case of my death; thank the heavens I thought. But more importantly, I HAD to survive this situation and because of the work environment I was in, I could not take off too much time from work. My work needed me for the most part of my living life and there was no running away from it. Without me, work came to a screeching halt and this cellulitis bacterial infection was trying to mess with me.

I spent a sleepless night all the while coming up with a firm plan as to how I was going to get stronger and kick this in the shins.

Simple, I thought. What if I had not seen this surgeon? What if this had happened to me and I was in the jungle somewhere? What if I was so poor that I could not afford all these doctors and modern medicines? Would I give up?

Absolutely not. I do not give up easily. I shall fight till the end. As Winston Churchill had said, “We shall never surrender.”

And so, starting the very next day, I started my plan of attack. Remember, as a backup, I still had a full prescription dosage of Clarithromycin 500 mg in my possession that I could fall back on if I ever needed in an emergency. But I determined to do without it for now. And how did I start?

Sure, I will start off with it in my next post, entitled Treating my cellulitis infection going back to basics.

Cellulitis infection surgery

I fixed an appointment with the surgeon recommended by my primary physician to address my umbilical recurrent cellulitis. It was a beautiful Friday and I decided to get my appointment at eleven O’clock in the morning. I walked into the surgeon’s office which was in a brand new building set back from the road quite a bit. It gave an overpowering impression to anyone that came in.

Now, I have been around the block many times and so no show and tell impresses me – just give me the facts only. Cheerfully, I filled out all of the repeating forms and paperwork, as these medical offices do to *protect* you as they say. The nurse then came in and took my blood pressure and pulse and they were all in perfect range.

Fifteen minutes later, the surgeon walked in. I started explaining my condition to him for the first time, making sure that I mentioned I had a prescription for clarithromycin for my potentially impending recurring cellulitis that I had not started yet. I also started explaining that my physician wanted me to see him. The surgeon quickly cut me short and told me that I need not go any further and that he knew exactly what he was dealing with.

Oh really, I thought to myself.

What an idiot.

Now I am an engineer by education and a damn good one at that and an entrepreneur and a damn good one at that. Whenever I am faced with a problem, any problem, I first gather ALL the facts before I settle for a plan of action. Apparently, this surgeon felt listening to the patient is a waste of time. May be he should take up a basic customer service course in a local evening college I figured.

And he said that all of the antibiotics that my physician had been prescribing were a waste and that what I was dealing with was a cyst that had gotten infected just below my belly button. And I asked him when did the cyst develop. He said right from birth.

And why did it take so many decades to manifest itself?

It is rare but it sometimes it manifests after years. All we need to do is to surgically operate and you should be fine. Now if you get the cellulitis symptoms anytime between now and the date of the surgery, do not take the antibiotics and simply call me. I don’t think that situation will arrive though.

And he proceeded to tell me that he was taking a week off to go on vacation to Hawaii and so the earliest he could see me was on the week following the following week.

Very good I told him and got out of the office wanting to puke at the system and the surgeon in particular. I returned back to my office and started reflecting on what I just heard and my experience with this surgeon who was knife happy but stupid enough not to listen to his patient.

And I said to myself, *This idiot will never touch my body let alone perform surgery and open up what God gave me graciously*. I went home and continued to reflect. These thoughts continue in my next post entitled Cellulitis infection reflection.

Recurrent cellulitis

As mentioned in a previous post, my doctor had prescribed Bactrim which is a sulfa based antibiotic treatment for my umbilical cellulitis. This treatment had to be repeated a second time since I experienced a recurrence of my cellulitis. When it came back a third time, the doctors office prescribed clindamycin which seemed to work faster. I concluded that I was experiencing recurrent cellulitis and started keeping track of the infection and the frequency with which it came back. That period in my case was six weeks.

Now recurrent cellulitis is treated by doctors by putting the patient on an antibiotic regimen, whereby the patient is generally asked to take an antibiotic treatment every two weeks or so. I feared what would happen if my body developed a resistance to the antibiotic and then I will have to go to progressively stronger and stronger medicines potentially. And from a layman’s point of view, I was not willing to settle for this.

So after taking the clindamycin treatment a second time after another six week relapse, I decided to watch my belly button very carefully and observe the very first inkling of recurrent cellulitis. Especially around the six week time period. Sure as can be, around five and a half weeks, I started getting a mild, a very mild pain. I immediately called the doctor and asked for an appointment.

Now, my doctor told me that it made no sense for me to keep coming back to him over and over again for the same issue and that given the fact that I was otherwise in very good health, I should really go and see a surgeon who might be more in tune with cellulitis infections. In the mean time, he told me that he would prescribe an antibiotic treatment of clarithromycin for a ten day period, but to go and see the surgeon rightaway.

I called and fixed an appointment with the surgeon and what a change in my life that did More to follow in the next post entitled cellulitis surgery.

Is cellulitis dangerous

My first question to my doctor as well my first question to myself was Is cellulitis dangerous? Now one needs a clear definition of what does dangerous mean. If you are asking the question Is cellulitis dangerous enough to cause death, the answer is yes, cellulitis can cause death. On the other hand, if the question is Are ALL cellulitis infections dangerous enough to cause death, the answer is no. Many times, a simple oral antibiotic treatment can cure the problem. In all cases though, cellulitis infections should NOT be ignored regardless of where it occurs and how little of discomfort it causes.

Cellulitis in the eye, such as orbital cellulitis is extremely dangerous. Deep infection cellulitis can be extremely dangerous. MRSA cellulitis is very tricky to treat because methicillin-resistant S aureus commonly called MRSA is very resistant to many antibiotics and gone are the days when MRSA strains were limited only to a small population of extremely high risk individuals.

But the general run of the mill cellulitis of the lower leg, or cellulitis in the arm, etc that occurs in individuals that are otherwise very healthy is not dangerous enough to cause death unless it is ignored and proper medical attention is not taken. A good physician can diagnose and cure the problem using proper drugs. The key though is to follow the medications directions exactly and not take short cuts; things like stopping an antibiotic prescription half way through because you start feeling better are not good ideas.

I decided to take my umbilical cellulitis seriously enough. I do not like to take risks that I do not understand. I do take calculated risks in life; but risks that are not calculated or those that are beyond my comprehension ( such as credit default swaps or mortgage backed variable annuities ) are not in my realm.

Periorbital and Orbital Cellulitis

In my continued studies and keeping myself educated, I came across two more terms: periorbital cellulitis and orbital cellulitis. Now neither of them were applicable in my case; however, whenever I hook myself on to a topic of science or technology, I try to learn as much as I can about not only the topic at hand but also related issues and related phenomena.

Orbital cellulitis is concerned with the eyes getting infected. This is not a fun situation to be in because in addition to significant redness of the lids of the eye, it could cause restrictions in your eye movements. Because orbital cellulitis is an infection so close to the brain, dangers of the infection spreading are pretty high and you should immediately get medical attention.

A less dangerous form is periorbital cellulitis which is the infection of the eyelids and infection of the areas around the eye. People with periorbital cellulits have lesser levels of pain and lesser bulging of the eyes.

Periorbital and orbital cellulitis are caused by infection that can arise from a variety of simple sources. Good hygiene practices is an essential first step in avoiding these diseases. If you wear contact lenses, take care of them and change them as recommended by the manufacturer. Do not stick your dirty hands in your eyes. Do not leave eye make up and similar facial makeup overnight. And if you even suspect an infection, run to your doctor and get medical attention immediately.

Cellulitis and death

As I started reading more and more about cellulitis, I came across some write-ups that were really scary and seemed to link cellulitis and death. Now I had learnt that cellulitis is simply a bacterial infection but then for some one to link cellulitis and death seemed far fetched at first. I am a pretty brave person to begin with; I have taken some serious risks in life and in business dealing with potentially dangerous situations from a technical standpoint, but can a little bacterial infection bring down a person to death?

Well, if you get cellulitis infection, better take it seriously. Take all of the precautions that your doctor recommends. Take the medication he gives you, read the dosage instructions and follow them thoroughly. This is not something you want to play with.

If the bacterial infection is not immediately attended to and starts to spread to your blood stream or lymph nodes, you could potentially die from cellulitis. If the infection spreads to your brain, it can cause meningitis. Necrotizing bacterial infection, which is commonly called flesh eating bacteria is a medical emergency that is an infection in the deep layers of the skin. If the bacteria are sufficiently potent and virulent, it can cause sepsis and start affecting the internal organs and thereby cause potential death. Organ failure and sepsis are to be avoided at all possible costs.

When I asked my doctor if I was dying, he said No, absolutely not. He said that I had detected it very early on and was doing all the right things and so I was going to be hale and healthy in no time at all. Good, I told him. I have a lot of living to do and I really need to see all of the wonders of humanity for years to come.

Cellulitis treatment

What are the cellulitis treatment methods available is of primary interest to those that have been affected. Usually the treatment for cellulitis infection involves the use of oral anitbiotics. If the oral antibiotics have apparently worked well as long as the infection has not spread to the bloodstream. If the oral antibiotic is not effective, intravenously delivered antibiotics are used for cellulitis treatment.

Intravenously delivered antibiotics for cellulitis treatment generally requires a hospital stay. This is also important so doctors can immediately attend to you if further complications arise; this is especially true if you have a weakened immune system. Topical antibiotics are generally limited to use in children.

It is important to note that you must mention all of the allergic reactions that you have a history of regarding antibiotics and other drugs. Based upon your history of allergic reactions to certain drugs, your doctor may be able to replace the treatment with alternative antibiotics.

In my case, I have a history of allergic reaction to penicillin and so I was prescribed Bactrim which is a sulfa drug. As soon as I came home with the prescription, my wife told me that it was not going to work. When asked why she thought so, her response was that sulfa has never worked for our children for anything and therefore may not work for me either. I made a mental note of that, but proceeded to take it. There were twenty tablets to be taken over a seven day period. And I did complete the whole dosage.

There was immediate relief within a matter of two days. There was absolutely no pain and the symptoms had all vanished by the time the dosage was completed.

Within six weeks the symptoms were back; this time it seemed a little more virulent. So I went back to the doctor and requested a stronger antibiotic, all the while remembering what my wife had said and how right she was. So they prescribed Clindamycin, also a one week treatment to be taken twice daily orally. I completed this treatment in its entirety with good results.

But then the cellulitis came back May be it likes me More on this in a future post under recurrent cellulitis.

What causes cellulitis

I was very curious about the causes of cellulitis, since in my case I am fairly in good health with no major problems such as diabetes, no skin problems of any kind, no blood pressure problems, etc. I have a normal pulse rate and no significant health issues of any kind. I do a lot of physical work every day and do NOT lead a sedentary life style such as sitting at a desk all day. My diet is primarily vegetarian and I consume chicken or fish once in a while; I eat a lot of fruits and generally maintain a very cheerful attitude on life itself with a great sense of humor as complimented by my friends and associates.

I started reading a lot about the causes of cellulitis and found that when bacteria enter the skin through a cut or other breaks in the skin, it could cause an infection that is the leading cause of cellulitis. These are usually streptococcus or staphylococcus bacteria. People with significant skin problems and those with very weak immune systems such as folks with diabetes, HIV infections and people with poor circulation problems are more prone to repeated occurances of cellulitis infections. If the infection gets deeper and deeper, necrotizing fasciitis, commonly called flesh eating bacteria can result which is a case of significant concern and must be immediately treated.
When my doctor was presented with my history, I requested that an x-ray be performed to make sure that there were no foreign bodies such as a metal chip present in my belly button. Because I reasoned that if a tiny metal chip that was lodged in my finger nails and I tried to clean my belly button using bare fingers such as just before a shower then that metal chip that may have carried the strep or staph bacteria, may have caused a slight tear of the sensitive navel skin and the bacteria could have entered thus, potentially with the foreign body lodged in the skin, causing cellulitis infection and hence the discharge. So I wanted to remove the foreign body if it still was inside.

The doctor did perform the x-ray and found no metal chips or any other foreign particles. That was a sign of relief. He also took a culture from the affected area and conclusively proved that it was in fact staph. He did perform an ultra sound test additionally to eliminate any other conditions and the test came in completely satisfactory with no problems of any kind.

In my mind, I concluded that the cause of the cellulitis was bacteria that may have entered the navel through some tiny break in the skin, but no foreign particles were left behind.

Cellulitis infection diagnosis

Doctors perform diagnosis of cellulitis infection generally by simply observing the symptoms such as redness and inflammation of the affected area. Patient reports such as pain that is not resolved by the standard use of acetaminophen or ibuprofen, significant pain in walking if the legs are affected, significant pain in moving arms if arms are affected and so on. Further cellulitis infection diagnosis is performed by analysis of cultures from the affected area or blood tests to identify the exact bacteria causing cellulitis infection. Ultra sound is sometimes used to eliminate factors such as blood clots, etc.

In my case, I found myself with pain in my belly button. The area around the navel was soft and tender. In a few days, a small discharge ensued. Initially, I thought may be a foreign object such as a small metal chip may have entered the belly button area and caused an infection. This thought came in as I work with metals a lot and there are metal chips all around me at work.

While I do not generally get panicked for any reason, this time was different. The reason being the umbilical area is not one that is easily observable by ones own self. And if there is a metal chip or any such foreign body anywhere else, such as fingers or palms of hands, then they can be easily taken out. But how do you take it out yourself from the belly button, not knowing where it even may be? And I had overheard a conversation years ago between two strangers at a coffee bar that infection from metals that enter the blood stream could be very dangerous.

And so I called my doctor and fixed an appointment. As noted above, I explained all of the history behind the situation. The doctor did all his studies and tests and diagnosed that it was umbilical cellulitis and prescribed me some oral antibiotics and sent me away More on this in a future post.

Cellulitis infection symptoms

Cellulitis infection symptoms can hardly be ignored. The area that is infected with cellulitis usually starts getting inflammed. There may be redness either accompanied or not accompanied by swelling. You may develop a fever or chills. Cellulitis infection symptoms almost always include pain, sometimes very severe.

You may want to know that cellulitis infection can occur in males or females, people of any age group from small children to elderly people as well as in people of any race or ethnicity.

There may be a discharge from the affected area but this does not happen all of the time. Symptoms may persist for some time or stop and re-occur within a few days.

It may also be noted that symptoms may take several days to manifest or start and rapidly progress within a matter of a few hours. In either case, if you can observe the symptoms, get medical attention immediately.

These symptoms can occur in the face, arms, legs, groin or virtually anywhere. In my case, I got affected with umbilical cellulitis, which affected my navel. The pain was so severe that it felt like I had strained several muscles from my belly button to my chest. There was a discharge of a thick fluid from my belly button and the whole navel area was red, tender and slightly swollen. I did not develop a fever nor did I have any chills. In the early days, I took a Q-tip and tried to clean the discharge every time before taking a shower and the Q-tip stunk quite a bit. I knew there was some infection of some kind.

The pain was so severe, that I had trouble laughing hard or coughing. Of course, even in the midst of all this pain and suffering, I found reason to laugh at life and may be that is the reason I am still alive. Sometimes, I would involuntarily have sudden deep short lived inhalations during breathing, especially when I lied down to sleep at night. I got scared and started investigating my symptoms more and more.

What is cellulitis

Cellulitis is the medical term for infection caused by bacteria in the skin below the epidermis layer. Cellulitis infection causes severe inflammation, swelling and redness. Generally, this is caused when bacteria enters the body through cuts, cracks and other broken areas of the skin; however, in some people especially those that have a very weak immune system, cellulitis infection can occur without a break in the skin.

People who have this infection and have a very poor immune response system need to be very careful since they can get repeated occurances of the symptoms and can sometimes end up with dangerous situations.

The bacteria that causes cellulitis is usually strep or staph. Cellulitis infection can occur almost anywhere in the body, since the body is generally covered all over with skin. When it occurs in the face, one needs to be over careful since it can migrate to the eye.

People that have diabetes and others that have weakened immune systems are very susceptible. Others that handle sea food or work with poultry without proper protective gear such as gloves are also susceptible. People that work in areas where their skin is prone to getting a lot of cuts and bruises need to pay extra care and attention to their broken skin area to prevent bacteria from entering their bodies.

You must immediately contact your doctor if you have a cut or bruise and start developing a fever or the bruised area starts getting redder more and more and the pain starts increasing and there is tenderness either with or without swelling.

Legal and Medical Disclaimer

The purpose of this blog is not to disseminate any medical advice either expressed or implied nor provide any medical information either express or implied nor recommend any medical treatments either express or implied to diagnose, cure or prevent any disease(s) or medical condition(s).
